IEA Annual Report 2021

The year 2021 marked a period of economic recovery for Ireland, despite ongoing challenges from the Covid-19 pandemic, Brexit and global supply chain disruptions. Irish exporters demonstrated strong resilience, with merchandise exports recording their eighth consecutive year of growth, supported by strong performances in pharmaceuticals, technology and services.

Employment in Enterprise Ireland and IDA-supported companies reached approximately 491,600 jobs, highlighting the export sector’s importance to Ireland’s economic recovery. However, rising energy prices, transport costs, material shortages and inflation created increasing pressure on businesses.

Throughout 2021, the IEA focused on supporting exporters through Brexit-related changes, customs requirements and supply chain difficulties. The Association engaged with Irish and EU policymakers, organised webinars through its Export Series and strengthened collaboration through five Regional Network Groups. Training programmes remained fully online, with new courses introduced on sustainable supply chains and carbon emissions reporting.

Sustainability became a central policy priority, with the IEA advocating for greener transport infrastructure, increased rail freight capacity and stronger integration of environmental objectives into Ireland’s trade strategy. The Association also emphasised export diversification to reduce dependence on the UK market.

Looking ahead, the IEA highlighted the importance of strengthening supply chain resilience, addressing inflationary pressures, supporting sustainable business practices and maintaining Ireland’s international competitiveness through investment, training and effective government policies.
