IEA Annual Report 2023

The IEA Annual Report 2023 highlights the resilience of Ireland’s export sector despite ongoing challenges from global conflicts, inflation, supply chain disruptions and the consequences of Brexit. Irish exporters continued to demonstrate adaptability, supported by strong performances in pharmaceuticals, technology and international services.

Ireland’s merchandise exports recorded nine consecutive years of growth in 2022, increasing by nearly 26%. Exporting companies also created approximately 40,000 additional jobs, bringing employment in agency-supported firms to over 529,000. However, export growth slowed in 2023 as global economic conditions weakened and higher interest rates affected businesses.

Throughout the period, the IEA strengthened its engagement with government and EU policymakers, advocating for policies supporting Irish exporters, SMEs and international competitiveness. The Association also promoted collaboration between exporters and logistics providers to improve supply chain efficiency and resilience.

Sustainability remained a major priority, with the IEA supporting greener transport infrastructure, increased rail connectivity, renewable energy development and more sustainable supply chain practices. Through its Export Series webinars and Regional Network Groups, the Association provided businesses with guidance on environmental regulations, energy costs and international trade opportunities.

Looking ahead to 2024, the IEA emphasised the importance of addressing inflation, high interest rates and slower economic growth while strengthening Ireland’s export competitiveness. Continued investment in sustainable infrastructure, innovation and support for Irish businesses was identified as essential for long-term economic resilience.
