IEA Annual Report 2020

The year 2020 presented unprecedented challenges for Irish exporters, primarily due to the Covid-19 pandemic and preparations for Brexit. Both events disrupted international trade, supply chains and business operations, highlighting the importance of resilience, adaptability and government support.

Despite these difficulties, Irish merchandise exports increased by 6% compared to 2019, while employment in IDA and Enterprise Ireland-supported companies reached approximately 465,700 jobs. The technology, pharmaceutical and IT services sectors demonstrated particular strength, helping Ireland maintain its export performance during the global crisis.

Throughout 2020, the IEA focused on supporting businesses through the pandemic and preparing them for the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. The Association organised 30 informational webinars, moved its training programmes entirely online and established five Regional Network Groups to strengthen collaboration between exporters.

The IEA also engaged extensively with Irish and EU policymakers, advocating for financial support, improved transport infrastructure, direct shipping routes to Europe and a State-backed Export Credit Scheme. Sustainability, climate action and maintaining Ireland’s international competitiveness remained important policy priorities.

Looking ahead to 2021 and 2022, the IEA highlighted the need to address supply chain disruptions, rising transport costs, inflation and ongoing Brexit-related challenges. Strengthening export resilience, supporting sustainable investment and maintaining strong international trade relationships were identified as essential for Ireland’s economic recovery and long-term growth.
