IEA Annual Report 2018

In 2018, Ireland achieved another record year for exports, reaching €321 billion, including €141 billion in goods and €180 billion in services. Export-related employment exceeded 400,000 jobs for the first time, demonstrating the continued importance of international trade to Ireland’s economy. Growth was particularly strong in chemicals, pharmaceuticals and computer services.

Despite this strong performance, Brexit remained the most significant challenge facing Irish exporters. Uncertainty surrounding customs procedures, tariffs, border controls and supply chains highlighted the need for greater preparedness. The IEA strongly supported the EU-UK Withdrawal Agreement and encouraged businesses to develop contingency plans to minimise potential disruptions.

Export diversification became increasingly important, with businesses expanding into markets such as the United States, Germany, France, Canada and Asia. To support this, the IEA launched its Markets Network Initiative and continued its Supply Chain Series, providing practical guidance, training and international market insights. Throughout the year, over 1,100 professionals received specialised training, while nearly 2,000 attended IEA events.

The IEA also strengthened its engagement with government, advocating for improved national competitiveness, transport infrastructure, access to skilled workers and support for entrepreneurship. Climate change and digital transformation were identified as growing challenges requiring businesses to adapt and innovate.

Looking ahead to 2019 and 2020, the IEA emphasised the importance of Brexit preparedness, export diversification, investment in infrastructure and skills development. These priorities aimed to strengthen Ireland’s resilience, maintain international competitiveness and ensure sustainable long-term export growth.
