IEA Annual Report 2017

In 2017, Ireland achieved another record year for exports, reaching €282 billion, an 11% increase compared with 2016. Services exports grew by €25 billion to €160 billion, while goods exports reached €122 billion. This strong performance reinforced the importance of international trade for Ireland’s economic growth, employment and competitiveness.

However, Brexit remained a major concern for Irish exporters, creating uncertainty around customs procedures, tariffs, supply chains and future trade relations with the UK. The IEA emphasised the importance of preparing businesses for these challenges while reducing Ireland’s dependence on the British market.

Export diversification became a key priority, with 66% of surveyed IEA members planning to enter new markets. Germany, the United States, France and Spain emerged as important opportunities. The IEA supported this transition through training programmes, customs guidance, the National Export Hub and its Supply Chain Series, helping SMEs strengthen their international capabilities.

Throughout 2017, the IEA also expanded its engagement with government and businesses, with over 1,000 professionals attending training courses and nearly 2,000 participating in industry events. These initiatives aimed to strengthen Ireland’s export sector and improve business resilience.

Looking ahead to 2018, the IEA identified four main priorities: maintaining cost competitiveness, addressing skills shortages, diversifying export markets and encouraging entrepreneurship. The Association called for stronger government support, infrastructure investment and Brexit preparedness to ensure Ireland’s continued export growth.
