IEA Submission: DETE Statement of Strategy 2025- 2028
Irish businesses are currently navigating a perfect storm of escalating costs,
including rent, wage rates and other costs. Following the opening of the latest
interconnector linking Ireland and Wales, we favour any measures that increase
competition in Ireland’s energy sector. Utility costs are significantly higher than the
European average, and the cost of electricity is the highest in Europe.
The physical connection to the more competitive UK and European markets offers Ireland a
unique opportunity to explore and introduce increased competition to the sector
here. The sooner we can fully harness our huge offshore wind capacity the more
securely we can provide an abundant, cheap form of electricity that will secure
investment into the future. It is imperative that all impediments, including planning,
grid upgrading and connectivity are expedited.
