Course Overview

The Sustainable Procurement course trains companies on assessing their current procurement processes and adopting more sustainable practices in the future. The course provides an overview of the Smart Freight Centre’s Freight Procurement Guidelines developed in conjunction with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). This course will bring participants up to date on the Circular Economy and Green Procurement (Clause 8.3 within ISO50001) in the context of a rapidly changing legislative and business environment.

The Sustainable Procurement training workshop consists of three modules. Each module will be delivered in interactive 50-minute sessions via the WebEx platform. This will be followed by a Q&A session where participants can raise particular issues and challenges their organisations to face.

Programme Modules

The course covers three core areas of sustainable supply chains over the three hours.

Module 1

Reprise and Update

Explore the legislative and climate drivers shaping sustainable business practices, and discover the key frameworks, approaches, and business benefits behind taking action. Through real-world case studies, including examples from Irish-based companies, participants will gain practical insights into the circular economy and sustainable or “green” procurement, along with actionable steps for implementing these strategies within their own organisation.

Module 2

The SFC/WBSCD Framework

Learn how to implement sustainable freight procurement using the Smart Freight Centre (SFC) / World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) Freight Procurement Guidelines. Participants will explore the key stages of sustainable procurement — from planning and tendering to contracting and carbon emissions reporting — while also discovering funding and support opportunities, including the EEOS-funded ECO Fleet platform.

Module 3

Engaging SME suppliers

Learn how to effectively engage suppliers in sustainable energy and carbon reduction programmes, while building confidence in the accuracy and quality of supplier data. Participants will also receive a copy of the Smart Freight Centre Procurement Guidelines to support implementation within their own organisation.
