Irish Exporters Host Roundtable with Welsh Transport Minister
Friday 7th March 2025: The Irish Exporters Association (IEA) today hosted a round table discussion with the Welsh Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, Ken Skates, MS. The discussion focused on the future resilience of Holyhead Port and the strategic role it plays for Irish exports and imports as well as the broader economies of both Ireland and Wales.
The event, hosted by KPMG, was attended by a number of IEA members who were impacted following the closure of the port during the busy Christmas and New Year period.
Commenting on the meeting, Simon McKeever, CEO of the IEA said, “We would like to welcome Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, Ken Skates, to Dublin. Today’s discussion was an opportunity for our members to give feedback to the Minister on the importance of Holyhead and the impact the recent disruption had on their businesses and wider supply chain. As importantly, we need to look to the future and find a way that all stakeholders on both sides of the Irish Sea can work collaboratively to ensure a more resilient and improved entry point for Irish exports accessing Holyhead port. We are fully committed to supporting that process and playing our part in that collaboration.”
Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, Ken Skates, MS said, “I was pleased to meet with the Irish Exporters Association and their members today to personally thank them for the remarkable way they’ve responded to the Port closure.
“We know the closure of the Port of Holyhead created significant challenges for our importers and exporters alike, and I am proud of the way we have all been able to work together with the Irish Government throughout the process.
“We’ll be taking what we have learned from the roundtable today into our taskforce meetings to ensure the future resilience of Holyhead Port for both nations.”
